INVOCATIONS
The Boston Camerata's 2010-2011 Concert Season
Early Bird Order Form

I. Vieni, Imeneo! Music and Marriage in the Italian Renaissance
A musical invocation of Hymen, Roman god of marriage! At the intersection of family power, pomp, religion, and raging youthful hormones, the celebration of marriage in Italy ca. 1500-1600 produced, among other things, an incredibly rich harvest of magnificent music. We will include works by Dufay, Josquin, Marenzio, Monteverdi and others, performed by a sumptuous array of voices and early instruments.
In collaboration with The Harvard Choral Fellows, Edward Jones, Director

II. The Sacred Bridge: Jews, Christians, and Muslims in Medieval Europe
Our first Hanukkah presentation! Our program includes elements of Jewish liturgy, Gregorian chant, song and texts of Jewish minstrels, Sephardic folksong, medieval Spanish Cantigas, and Judaeo-Arabic music from the ancient Andalusian tradition. The Sacred Bridge reveals astonishing and beautiful interactions among these various communities, and underlines their profound interdependence. Joel Cohen and The Boston Camerata musicians are joined by members of the
Sharq Arabic Music ensemble.
Glowed with an inner light... a shared celebration!
- Le Midi Libre, 2010

III. An American Christmas
A holiday favorite, returning to the Boston area! From the early years of the American republic, and from a wide range of early tunebooks and manuscripts, a generous selection of carols, New England anthems, hymns and religious ballads for the season. Magnificent music, and our very own, sounding forth in some of our region's most beautiful historic architectural spaces.

IV: The Spark of the Soul
An exploration of German and French mysticism in the Middle Ages around the personality of Meister Eckhart (c.1260 - c.1327). Powerful songs and poetry about the striving for divinity and transcendence. You will also hear, centuries old but fresh as yesterday's headlines, some sharply critical views of ecclesiastical power. Specially conceived as our Lenten offering. Commissioned by festivals in France and Germany, this performance will be the American premiere of this unique production.
Under the new direction of Anne Azéma, [Camerata's] leadership in the field is not in question. --San Diego.com
